Abstract: PURPOSE: The use of ascorbic acid derivatives such as ascorbic acid ester as a bleaching or depigmentation agent for the skin and/or hair is provided. In formula, R1 to R4 are independently H or a group selected from methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, ferulyl, benzyl, trimethylsilyl, triphenylsilyl, tertiary butyl dimethylsilyl, acetyl, propanoyl, palmitoyl, lipoyl, benzoyl, SO3H, O=P(OH)OH and CH3NHCO; R2 and R3 are independently H or a group selected from methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, ferulyl, benzyl, trimethylsilyl, triphenylsilyl, tertiary butyl dimethylsilyl, acetyl, propanoyl, palmitoyl, lipoyl, benzoyl, SO3H, O=P(OH)OH and CH3NHCO and completes a 5- or 6-membered ring, provided that at least one of R2 and R3 is not H. The compound of formula 1 is 5-(2,2-dimethyl(1,3)dioxolane-4-yl)-4-hydroxy-2-oxo-2,5-dihydro-3-furanyl 3-((4-acetoxy-3-methoxy)-phenyl) acrylate.
