    Abstract: An alkyd type novel branched polycondensate is provided to be formulated into a nail vanish composition which is able to maintain improved covering property and gloss. A cosmetic or pharmaceutical composition comprises at least one polycondensate in a cosmetically or a pharmaceutically acceptable medium, wherein the polycondensate is obtained by reacting 15-30 wt.% of at least one polyol having 3-6 hydroxyl groups; 5-40 wt.% of at least one C6-20 saturated or unsaturated, linear, branched and/or cyclic non-aromatic monocarboxylic acid; 10-55 wt.% of at least one C7-11 aromatic monocarboxylic acid(which may be substituted with one to three C1-32 saturated or unsaturated, linear, branched and/or cyclic alkyl radical(s)); and 10-25 wt.% of at least one saturated or unsaturated, or aromatic, linear, branched and/or cyclic polycarboxylic acid having 2-4 COOH(s) or a cyclic anhydride thereof. A method for preparing the polycondensate comprises the steps of: (a) mixing a polyol with aromatic and non-aromatic monocarboxylic acid; (b) heating the mixture under inert atmosphere to a melting point and then heating it to a temperature of 150-220 deg.C to completely consume the mono-carboxylic acid; (c) cooling the mixture down to 90-150 deg.C; (d) adding polycarboxylic acid and/or cyclic anhydride thereof, and optionally silicone having hydroxyl or carboxyl to the mixture; and (e) heating it to a temperature of 220 deg.C or less.
