Abstract: An apparatus for battery charging in a portable terminal is provided to detect mounting and demounting of a battery pack by hardware without using a FET(Field Effect Transistor). An apparatus for battery charging in a portable terminal includes an external power supply unit(301), a charging integrated circuit(303), and a battery detecting unit(307). The external power supply unit provides AC power to charge a battery pack(305). The charging integrated circuit converts the AC power provided from the external power supply unit into charging current to charge the battery pack. The battery detecting unit is composed of resistance elements between the charging integrated circuit and a battery. The battery detecting unit controls the charging current by mounting and demounting of the battery pack.
