Abstract: 영상 시퀀스를 서브 그룹으로 분할하고 서브 그룹 내에 구비된 양방향 픽처들과 참조 픽처와의 상관 관계를 이용하여 각 서브 그룹 단위로 적용할 부호화 모드를 결정하는 영상 부호화 방법 및 장치, 그 복호화 방법 및 장치가 개시된다. 본 발명에 따르면 부호화될 픽처 그룹을 연속된 B 픽처를 기준으로 분할하여 서브 그룹을 생성하고, 각 부호화 모드에 따른 참조 픽처와 서브 그룹 내에 구비된 B 픽처 사이의 상관도를 계산하여 가장 높은 상관도를 갖는 참조 픽처를 이용하는 부호화 모드를 서브 그룹 단위로 적용하여 부호화를 수행함으로써 부호화 효율을 향상시킨다.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for coding and decoding images are provided to improve a coding efficiency by minimizing a prediction error between a predicted image and a coded image according to image characteristics. A sub-group generating unit(210) divides a picture group including a plurality of image pictures provided in an image sequence based on a successive bi-directional picture to generate subgroups. A correlation calculating unit(220) calculates correlation between a reference picture and the bi-directional pictures by a plurality of coding modes which are classified according to whether the bi-directional picture can be used as a reference picture and according to the reference picture referred to by the bi-directional pictures. A coding mode selecting unit(230) selects one of coding modes by using the correlation. A coding unit(240) performs coding by subgroups according to the selected coding mode.
