Abstract: PURPOSE: A method for storing data in a storage medium and a data storage device including the same are provided to efficiently compress the data to be stored in the storage medium by improving an access speed for random data. CONSTITUTION: A controller(220) selectively compress data received from the outside and stores the compressed data in a storage medium(210). The controller determines a type of the data as user data or metadata for managing the user data and selectively compresses the data according to the determination result. The controller receives a logical address corresponding to the received data. The logical address points an area including sequential address values. When the received data is determined as the user data, the controller determines a compression unit of the received data according to the size of the area pointed by the logical address.

Abstract: PURPOSE: A data storage device with a data compression function is provided to determine the compression of data without a set of information which is provided from the outside, thereby improving the performance of the data storage device. CONSTITUTION: A compression ratio calculator (2120) compares the compression ratio and the target compression ratio of the inputted data. A buffer memory (2400) temporarily stores the inputted data which is transmitted through a host interface. A compression block (2500) compresses the inputted data according to a calculation result of the compression ratio calculator. A host buffer manager (2110) buffers the inputted data in order to solve the difference in transmission speed between a bus and a host which are connected to the buffer memory and the compression block, respectively.
