Abstract: PURPOSE: A data tranceiving device in a communication/broadcasting system and a method thereof are provided to encode and decode information bit strings having various lengths by drilling and shortening a bit group corresponding to each column group. CONSTITUTION: A transmitting end includes control unit(202), a zero padding unit(204), a BCH(Bose, Chaudhuri, Hocquenghem) encoding unit(206), an LDPC encoding unit(208), and a drilling unit(210). The zero padding unit pads one or more zero bits to an inputted information bit string. The zero padding unit satisfies an input bit string length of the BCH encoding unit. The zero padding unit determines a position of one or more zero bits. The zero padding unit additionally pads each information bit. The zero padding unit replaces the zero bits for the information bits. Abstract: PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for transmitting and receiving data in a communication/broadcasting system are provided to maintain optimal performance by encoding and decoding different lengths of information bits. CONSTITUTION: The number of 0-padded bits is determined. The number of bit groups padding all bits to 0 is determined. All bits within 0th to Npad-1th bit groups directed with a shortening pattern are padded to 0. Information bits are mapped with locations of bits which are not padded in BCH(Bose Chaudhuri Hocquenghem) information bits. The BCH information bits are encoded in BCH to generate LDPC(Low Density Parity Check) information bits. The LDPC information bits are encoded in LDPC in order to generate 0-padded code words.
