Abstract: An apparatus and a method for authenticating use of a toner of an image forming apparatus are provided to operate the image forming apparatus only when an authorized toner is set in the image forming apparatus. An apparatus for authenticating a toner of an image forming apparatus includes a toner confirmation unit(200) for confirming whether a toner set in the image forming apparatus is an authorized product, an authentication confirmation unit(220) for confirming whether the toner has been authenticated when the toner is not an authorized product, and a user interface(240) by which a user is inquired whether the user wants authentication of the toner when the toner has not been authenticated. The apparatus further includes an authentication unit(260) for authenticating the toner when the user wants authentication and storing an identification number of the authenticated toner in a memory of the image forming apparatus, and an operation interrupting unit(280) for interrupting the operation of the image forming apparatus when the user does not want authentication of the toner.
