Abstract: An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) is provided to realize the excellent color reproducibility and optical efficiency by using an ultraviolet ray emission unit as a light source and by using fluorescent layer for converting ultraviolet ray to visible light. A light source emits ultraviolet ray. A fluorescent layer is formed to convert ultraviolet ray emitted from the light source to the visible light. An ultraviolet LED(Light Emitting Diode) or an ultraviolet lamp is used as the light source. The fluorescent layer is formed at the color filter substrate or at the thin film transistor substrate included in the LCD. A black matrix(210) is formed on the color filter substrate. A common electrode is formed on the black matrix. The fluorescent layer is formed between the substrate and black matrix, or between the black matrix and common electrode, or on the common electrode, and consists of at least one of red, green and blue fluorescent layers.
