    Abstract: A method for managing the metadata of a file system by using a DBMS(Database Management System) is provided to ensure transaction stably by processing the metadata of the file system through an API(Application Program Interface) provided by the DBMS and design a disk allocated algorithm optimized according to a multimedia environment by directly controlling a disk layout with respect to file data. A method for managing the metadata of a file system comprises the followings: searching an empty space existing in a disk through a DBMS managing the meta data of the file system according as a data write request is received from application(210,230); writing the metadata in the empty space of the disk without passing the DBMS by referring to the search result(240); and updating a changed part according as the metadata out of the metadata is written through the DBMS(250).

    Abstract: A method and an apparatus for allocating a free space of a disk for storing a file are provided to reduce a search time by allocating the free space of the disk according to sizes of empty spaces. A first algorithm process is performed to execute a first algorithm to allocate empty spaces positioned at a constant distance from a reference point(210). A first decision process is performed to decide whether an allocating process of the empty spaces for the object data is completed by using the first algorithm(220). A second algorithm process is performed to execute a second algorithm to allocate large-sized empty spaces in the first place(230). A second decision process is performed to decide whether the allocating process of the empty spaces for the object data is completed by using the second algorithm(240). A third decision process is performed to decide a remaining state of the empty spaces(250).
