Abstract: An automatic repeat request apparatus in a multi input multi output system, and a method thereof are provided to improve a performance by selecting an optimum antenna and performing a re-transmission based on the channel state information. An automatic repeat request apparatus in a multi input multi output system includes a communication module(410), a control unit(420), and a storage unit(430). The communication module has a plurality of antennas for communicating with a different node. The control unit receives packets transmitted from a transmitter through the communication module. If an error occurs in one packet of the packets, and the control unit receives the error packet from a weakest antenna under a partial multiplexing mode, the control unit calculates the number of first re-transmissions of a minimum number for calculating a signal to noise ratio within an AMC(Adaptive Modulation and Coding) level range. If the number of first re-transmissions is larger than a threshold value, the control unit requests the re-transmission to the transmitter through the strongest antenna under the partial multiplexing mode. If the number of first re-transmissions is smaller than the threshold value, the control unit performs the re-transmission through the weakest antenna under the partial multiplexing mode. The storage unit provides a necessary space and a storage space for an operation of the control unit.
