Abstract: A device and a method for distinguishing a display panel are provided to distinguish a display panel without mounting a RAM or a pin additionally, thereby simplifying a manufacturing process of a portable terminal. A driving unit IC of a display device includes a plurality of pins and an output pin. The pins are electrically connected according to a kind of a panel. The output pin outputs an output signal informing a kind of the panel. A controller distinguishes a kind of the panel through an output signal outputted from a driving unit(S201~S203). The controller applies a control signal corresponding to the distinguished panel to the driving unit(S204). The pins are differently and electrically connected according to a kind of a metal pattern formed on the panel.
