Abstract: The present invention relates to a fault detection method of a distribution system and a fault detection device, which automatically detect failure through singular value decomposition and wavelet transformation of a phase voltage in a relay and determine the kind of the failure. The fault detection method of a distribution system according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises a step of obtaining phase-voltage data of a distribution system; a step of performing wavelet transformation for the phase-voltage data; a step of calculating a first fault detection index (SD) using a wavelet detail coefficient value to a value as a result of the wavelet transformation; a step of calculating a second fault detection index (SA) using a wavelet approximation coefficient value to the value as a result of the wavelet transformation; and a step of detecting the failure of the distribution system using the first fault detection index and the second fault detection index.
