Abstract: A method and an apparatus for extracting alternative words are provided. A method for extracting alternative words with respect to a characteristic noun indicating characteristics of a specific object from a sentence associated with the specific object according to the present invention includes: (a) calculating an appearance frequency by distance of a pair of noun and predicate extracted from a sentence by analyzing a morpheme and an appearance frequency of a combination noun constituting a compound noun among the nouns; (b) calculating a relation value of the predicate with respect to the noun and the combination noun in a category and extracting the predicate and the combination noun associated with the noun using the calculated appearance frequency; and (c) calculating similarity between the nouns by generating a characteristic vector by distance of the extracted predicate with respect to the noun and a characteristic vector of the extracted combination noun, and extracting the alternative words based on the calculated similarity.
