    Abstract: The ferrule (3) has flange portion, which is made of a resinous composition comprising a resin and carbon fibre as a filler. Part of the outer surface of one ferrule is surrounded by a metal tube, one end of which is embedded in the flange portion. One end of the ferrule protrudes from the end of the metal tube (4) that is not embedded in the flange portion. A mould shrinkage factor of the composition is less than 0.2%. The obtd. ferrule has large flexural strength.

    Abstract: The passage in the sleeve has a diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the optical fibres. The sleeve defines a notch in an outer periphery of a central portion of the sleeve. The notch extends radially inward to expose the passage, the width, in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve, across the opening into the passage provided by the notch, being less than the diameter of the optical fibres. The notch has a size to permit visual inspection of optical fibers in the passage. The length of the notch may be five times the diameter of the optical fibres being connected. An adhesive may be disposed in the notch which provides a matching function between the optical fibres. The sleeve may be surrounded by a housing to form a coupler.
