Abstract: The invention relates to a method for classifying traffic in telecommunications networks, including a traffic capture step and an indepth packet analysis step. The invention also includes a step comprising the statistical classification of the traffic, using a statistically generated decision tree. Preferably the statistical traffic classification step is carried out after the indepth packet analysis and only involves traffic that has not been identified by said packet analysis, in particular encrypted traffic, for example using encrypted peer-to-peer protocols.
