Abstract: A vertical aligning polystyrene derivative, a composition for forming an alignment layer containing the derivative, and an LCD device containing the alignment layer using the composition are provided to improve the uniformity of vertical alignment, to increase pretilt angle and to enhance printability and transparency. A vertical aligning polystyrene derivative is represented by the formula 1, wherein p is 0.50-0.99; l is an integer of 10-10,000; m and n are independently an integer of 1-4; X1 is a halogen atom; R1 is -S-, -SO2, -O-, -CO-, -COO-, -OCO-, -NHCO- or -CONH-; and R2 is a C4-C20 alkyl group, an alkyl group substituted with a halogen atom or an aryl group, an aryl group, or an aryl group substituted with an alkyl group, a halogen atom, an alkoxy group, a hydroxyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aryl group, an arylalkyl group, a hetero cyclic aromatic group, an aryl ester group, an aryl ether group or an aryl carbonyl group.
