    Abstract: A distributed/opportunistic scheduling method for multiple user diversity gains in an IEEE(Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers)802.11 wireless LAN(Local Area Network) is provided to transmit a search message to all mobile nodes as enabling the most suitable node only to respond to the message, thereby maintaining searching overheads at less than a certain level all the time regardless of the number of search target nodes, consequently maximum diversity gains are obtained. A channel search message is broadcasted to all receivers from a transmitter to notify of a channel search intention(S10). Receiving signal strengths are measured for all transmission from the transmitter, and a probability density function of a receiving signal strength is derived from the measured receiving signal strengths(S20). The derived function is classified into predetermined sections(S30). Depending on in which section the current receiving signal strength is included, backoff time is determined(S40). A response message is transmitted after the backoff time(S50). The transmitter transmits data to a receiver which first transmits the response message(S60).
