Abstract: PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for an initial frequency synchronization of a digital audio broadcasting system are provided which can obtain an accurate synchronization as to a large frequency offset error using a differential detector of a phase reference symbol. CONSTITUTION: A differential detector part(30) performs a differential detection between the kth carrier and the (k-1)th carrier as to a received phase reference symbol. A correlation value calculation part(32) calculates a correlation value with an output signal of the differential detector part as shifting the differentially-detected phase reference symbol. And a frequency error estimation part(34) determines a circular shifting position having a maximum correlation value, and outputs an estimated integer-timed frequency error by determining the determined circular shifting position as a value corresponding to an integer-time of the frequency error.
