Abstract: The present invention relates to an automatic water intake apparatus for a water purifier which enables a user to freely choose a water intake mode and the amount of water intake, while supplying a predetermined ratio of water regardless of the size and shape of a cup, and a method for operating the same. The automatic water intake apparatus for a water purifier according to the present invention includes a water intake configuration unit for setting the water intake mode of the water purifier and the ratio of water collected in accordance with the height of a cup placed on the water purifier; a water intake control unit for controlling the water intake work in accordance with the information predetermined by the water intake configuration unit; and a water supply valve operation unit for opening and closing cold water pipe or hot water pipe in accordance with a control signal of the water intake control unit.
