    Abstract: A novel compound is provided to suppress the crystal growth of pigments, stabilize fine pigment particles, and lower the viscosity when combined with pigments. A pigment composition is provided to suppress the crystal growth of the pigment, thereby capable of stably and highly pulverizing the pigment particles. A colored composition is provided to be suitable for using printing inks and paints, have low viscosity and show excellent stability with time. A benzoisoindole derivative is represented by the formula(1), wherein R^1 is H, alkyl which may be substituted, or acyl which may be substituted; each R^2, R^3, R^5, R^6, R^7, R^8, R^9 and R^10 is independently H, alkyl which may be substituted, phenyl, halogen, cyano, alkoxy which may be substituted, or -NR^12R^13(where each R^12 and R^13 is independently H or alkyl which may be substituted, or R^12 and R^13 may be bonded together to form a heterocyclic ring which may further contain N, O or S); R^4 is H, alkyl which may be substituted, acyl which may be substituted or a substituent represented by the formula(2) of -Y-(Z)k(where Y is direct bond), -O-, -S(O)m-(where m is an integer of from 0 to 3), -CO-, -NR^14, -CONR^14, -SO2NR^14, -NR^14, CO-, NR^14SO2-(where R^14 is H, alkyl or hydroxyalkyl), C1-12 linear or branched alkylene, or benzene residue or triazine residue, or a linking group formed of at least two these linking groups; Z is H, halogen, alkyl which may be substituted, aryl which may be substituted, phthalimidomethyl which may be substituted, -NR^15R^16, -SO3., -SO3.M/n or -COO.M/n; and k is 1 or 2; and R^11 is H, halogen, nitro, cyano, hydroxyl, alkoxy which may be substituted, aryloxy which may be substituted, -S(O)mR^17, -NR^18R^19 or -N2^+X^-. A pigment composition comprises a pigment and a benzoisoindole derivative of the formula(1), where the pigment is selected from the group consisting of a diketopyrrolopyrrole red pigment, a quinacridone red pigment, a thiazine-indigo red pigment, and an anthraquinone red pigment. A colored composition comprises the pigment composition and a pigment carrier.
