Abstract: A modified cathode for a molten carbonate fuel cell is provided to allow long-term operation of a fuel cell by virtue of low solubility to an electrolyte, to realize excellent resistance against mechanical stress, and to enable production of a large-area electrode. A modified cathode for a molten carbonate fuel cell is obtained by coating nickel powder with M-(OH)2, wherein M is a transition metal, followed by reductive firing. In the modified cathode, M-(OH)2 is a reaction product between an aqueous solution of M-(NO3)2, M-SO4 or M-(CH3CO2)2, wherein M is a transition metal, and LiOH or NaOH. Nickel and the transition metal, M, are used in a weight ratio of 100:5.5-100:15.5. The transition metal, M, is selected from the group consisting of Co, Mn, Zn, Cr, Fe and Mg.
