    Abstract: PURPOSE: A continuous neutral density filter is provided to freely make a filter with desired thickness to control intensity distribution of a beam by controlling absorptivity of beam in accordance with the thickness of medium. CONSTITUTION: A continuous neutral density filter is absorbent type and comprises a first lens and a second lens(17). The first lens controls intensity shape of beam such that the profile of an exit plane(18b) of the filter being of desired optical density function, that is continuous variable thickness, to a plane(18a) of incidence perpendicular to optic axis. The second lens has a plane(17a) of incidence and a vertical exit plane(17b). The plane of incidence has a shape opposite to the exit plane of the first lens to prevent shape damage of the beam emitted from the first lens. Towards center portion of the filter, attenuation of passage beam is smaller, and similarly, closer to the circumference of the filter attenuation of the beam is larger.

    Abstract: An absorption type continuous neutral density filter controls an intensity distribution of a light beam from a laser to provide the intensity distribution of the light beam desired by an user. In the filter, the intensity distribution of the light beam is controlled by adjusting absorption of the light beam by the varying thickness of medium of the filter. This control of the distribution of the light intensity is accomplished by predefining the variance of thickness of the filter to a form required by the user. As a result, the continuous neutral density filter can be easily fabricated.
