    Abstract: PURPOSE: A UHMWP(ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) and a production method thereof are provided to improve abrasion resistance by cross linking the UHMWP up to several hundreds micro meter from the surface through a photochemical reaction. CONSTITUTION: An ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is added up in the mixture of a vinyl monomer and an optical initiator as a cross-linking agent. The mixture is photopolymerized by projecting ultraviolet ray at an ordinary temperature or at 120deg.C for 30 minutes to one hour. Under the existence of the crosslinking agent and the optical initiator, the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is cross-linked up to several hundreds micro meter from the surface by the photopolymerization. Accordingly, the abrasion resistance of the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is improved.
