Abstract: PURPOSE: Provided is a method for removing recalcitrant organic contaminants with high efficiency by using redox mediator such as lignin decomposition by-product along with manganese oxide. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of (a) causing oxidation-neutralization reactions between recalcitrant organic contaminants and naturally generated organic material reaction mediator and manganese oxides, wherein the manganese oxide is birnessite, and wherein the naturally generated organic material reaction mediator is phenol compound which is by-product of lignin decomposition.
