Abstract: A method and an apparatus for heating and carbonizing organic substances are provided to save energy and floor space and to shorten time required for response and cooling by mixing small amount of microwave initiator with organic substances having low dielectric loss. An apparatus for carbonizing organic substances includes a magnetron head which is installed at a side of microwave generator to generate microwaves, a waveguide tube which is mounted at a side of the magnetron head to transfer microwave generated from the microwave generator, a reaction furnace, an outlet for gas, and an inlet for gas which are formed in the waveguide tube for implementing reaction in a gaseous environment, an absorption device which absorbs reflected microwaves, a first bending and a second bending which are formed to make the waveguide with C-shape, a dummy rod for preventing overheating of the magnetron head and a tuner for reducing reflected microwaves are placed consecutively in the waveguide, a furnace which is installed in between the first bending and the second bending, an inlet and an outlet for gas which are provided at each bending, a directional coupler which is placed in between an end of the wave guide and the second bending to attenuate incident microwaves and reflected microwaves, a device which is assembled to the directional coupler for measuring absorbed microwaves at the furnace to control electrical power supplied to the microwave generator, and a second dummy rod which absorbs reflected microwaves at the end of the waveguide.
