Abstract: Suggested are an apparatus and a method for protecting a cooling device of an underground complex substation, capable of switching a motor by sensing a cooling function loss due to the shortage of water of a cooling tower, the breakdown or separation of a belt of a cooling fan, and the breakdown of an impeller based on a current measured in a pump start circuit included in a cooling unit of a transformer in the underground complex substation. The suggested apparatus for protecting the cooling device of the underground complex substation includes: a contact point for sensing a low current which is opened or closed based on a preset current and a load current inputted from the pump start circuit of the cooling unit; a UC sensing unit which determines whether the cooling function of the cooling unit is lost based on the opening or closing of the contact point for sensing the low current; and a power supply unit which switches the motor of the cooling unit if the UC sensing unit determines the loss of the cooling function.
