Abstract: PURPOSE: A soft/hard hand-off method for CDMA cellular mobile communication system is provided to improve an entire system performance by performing a soft hand-off in the case that a load of a system is small and performing a hard hand-off in the case that a load of the system is large. CONSTITUTION: A base station receives a soft hand-off request message from a mobile terminal(101). The base station transmits a hand-off request message to a target base station in which the mobile terminal is moved(102) and receives a response message to the hand-off request from the target base station(103). The base station analyzes the response message and discriminates as to whether a channel usable in the target base station is existed(104). The base station transmits a hand-off rejecting message to the mobile terminal when the channel usable in the target base station is not existed(106). The base station compares a number of current serviced calls with a threshold value when the channel usable in the target base station is existed(105). The base station transmits a hard hand-off indicating message to the mobile terminal when the number of current serviced calls are greater than the threshold value to perform the hard hand-off(107). The base station transmits a soft hand-off indicating message to the mobile terminal when the number of current serviced calls are less than the threshold value to perform the soft hand-off(108).
