Abstract: PURPOSE: An MPOA(MultiProtocol Over ATM)-based 3-layer VLAN(Virtual LAN) system is provided to install a VLAN management server together with an MPOA server in order to efficiently support broadcast transmission for VLAN members as well as 3-layer unicast transmission. CONSTITUTION: An MPOA-based 3-layer VLAN(Virtual LAN) consists of three ELANs(Emulated LANs)(101-103). Each ELAN(101-103), equivalent to an LIS(Logical IP Subnetwork), is composed of an MPOA/VLAN server(104), an edge device(105), and hosts(106). Each MPOA/VLAN server(104) covers both an MPOA server function and a VLAN server function at the same time, maintains VLAN information, and processes control messages for VLAN configuration. In the MPOA-based 3-layer VLAN, each server(104), connected through a VC(Virtual Connection), exchanges updated information each other, without the necessity of a central server that collects and controls updated information.
