Abstract: An extract of Cucumis sativus L. is provided to remove the toxicity of paraquat completely and show excellent active oxygen species(such as hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical) scavenging activity, thereby being used for an antioxidant composition. The antioxidant composition comprises an extract of Cucumis sativus L. as an effective ingredient. The method for preparing the extract comprises the steps of: (a) extracting Cucumis sativus L. with at least one solvent selected from the group consisting of methanol, ethanol, propanol, and chloroform and concentrating it under reduced pressure; (b) respectively fractionating the concentrate with hexane, ethyl ether, ethyl acetate, butanol and water; and (c) performing silica gel column chromatography, Sep-Pack C18 cartridge and HPLC in sequence on fractions obtained from the step(b).
