Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a torque converter capable of selecting the material of converting shaft independently from the magnetic characteristics of the material. SOLUTION: The torque converter whose magnetoelastic region 2 formed in a cylinder shape is permanently magnetized in the azimuth direction and has a converting shaft 1 arranged together with a magnetoelastic region 2 formed in cylinder fixed around the cylinder of the converting shaft 1. The converting shaft 1 provided with the magnetoelastic region 2 formed in cylinder is surrounded by a winding 4 supplied by alternating current. The winding 4 is connected to a phase detector 5. With this invention, magnetism and a nonlinear ferromagnetic material 3' physically contact the magnetoelastic region 2 formed in cylinder.

The controller generates a direct current which is proportional to the signal and is connected to the winding with such a polarity that it counteracts the static magnetic field generated in the shaft. This direct current constitutes a measure of the torque with which the shaft is loaded.

The method and system demand a very moderate calculation capacity, thereby to facilitate the use of low cost microprocessors of ordinary speed. The present method and system utilize a sampling being synchronized with the transducer excitation frequency f. Sampling of the sensor signal is performed by an A/D-converter at a high sampling frequency, nf. The sampled signal then is averaged over half a period of the excitation signal frequency, whereby the starting point of the averaging is decided by the time of commutation. This is equal to filtering the sampled signal by a decimating filter. The rectification may then may be preformed with a number sequence sampled by the optimal sampling frequency 2f (twice the excitation frequency only) instead of the sampling frequency nf used for obtaining high resolution. The output then is further filtered by means of a digital filter acting as an ideal low-pass filter as well as an output filter for achieving a desired output signal level. The signal output will be then be simply made available for further digital processing. However, the output still offers high resolution measurements in spite of only demanding moderate speed microprocessor capacity for the processing.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for accurately determining TDC in a cylinder of an internal combustion engine. Gas pressure is measured in the cylinder relative to crank angle, giving rise to a curve of gas pressure with crank angle. An offset is found by first computing the angular position of an inflexion point of the compression pressure curve measured as a function of the crank angle, and then computing the offset as the difference between the angular position of a piston in the cylinder and a theoretical value for said angular position of the piston dependent on a known or measured flywheel angle. The value of TDC corrected by the offset is then used to calculate a value of work output such as the Indicated Mean Effective Pressure (IMEP) which may be used for diagnostic and/or control purposes.
