PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for obtaining the position of a counter wheel (1) in a wheel counter mechanism, in terms of capacity. SOLUTION: The device is provided with fixing electrodes (3 and 3') at a certain distance from the counter wheel (1). A series of measurement electrodes (12, 12' and 12") are extended onto the outer periphery of the counter wheel (1) and non-conductive sections (13 and 13') are electrically arranged among the measurement electrodes. Then high or low, i.e., the binary value of zero or one is detected concerning each position of the counter wheel and each fixing electrode. The binary expression of an optionally desired number which expresses the present position of the counter wheel (1) is formed by combining the binary values through the use of the number of the fixing electrodes for each counter wheel.

The invention relates to a direct methanol fuel cell and to a method for controlling the methanol concentration without requiring the provision of additional methanol concentration sensors (47). Instead, the current-voltage characteristic curves of the fuel cell (40) are sampled using small variations of the system variables current I and methanol concentration M, and information used for controlling is obtained therefrom. In systems possessing an electrical buffer (49), a connected consumer is supplied without interruption despite the abandonment, as described by the invention, of the optimal operating point of the fuel cell.

A film (1) comprises a base (2) consisting of an electrically insulating polymer which carries on one or both surfaces a sequence of electrically conductively coated areas (3) which are separated by non-coated interstices (4). The film or a superposition of films arranged one above the other can be shaped, i.e., folded or preferably wound to form a capacitor with a plurality of essentially parallel electrodes which are insulated from each other and consist each of one or more electrode layers formed by the coated areas (3) and separated by dielectric layers formed by sections of the base (2). An electrode layer may comprise two adjacent coated areas pertaining to subsequent turns. The capacitor has high voltage withstand capacity and can be used, e.g., as a high voltage capacitor in a capacitive voltage transformer in series with a conventional low voltage transformer wound from two superposed conductively coated films.

The coverings have differing thicknesses (di, dj). Measurements of capacity between electrodes (4, 5, 6, 13) are used to calculate the effective thickness (ds/ epsilon s) of an insulating film of contamination (14). An Independent claim is included for a capacitative level sensor. Preferred Features: The quotient of double layer capacities CDSj and CDSi for the ith and jth electrodes is obtained from a cited equation. The effective thickness is obtained from a further equation, relating dielectric constant of the coverings, their thicknesses, and capacitor areas. The sensor has a covering thickness of ca. 1 mm, with a dielectric constant below 5. The contaminant film electrical characteristics are specified in terms of a critical frequency related to measurement. Measurement frequency is specified as a function of dielectric relaxation frequency at the boundary layer. Though dielectric thickness varies and the electrodes are segmented, the probe external configuration, is a long, smooth, cylindrical rod.
