Abstract: For tuning the fiber optic retarder (4) of a fiber optic current sensor towards a desired temperature dependence, the sensing fiber (5) is exposed to a magnetic field or corresponding electric current and the sensor signal as well as the signal's dependence on the retarder temperature are measured From this initial sensor signal and its temperature dependence, a target sensor signal can be determined, at which the dependence on the retarder temperature equals a desired value. Then, the retarder (4) is thermally treated until the sensor signal reaches the target value. The method obviates the need for repetitively measuring the temperature dependence during the tuning process.

Abstract: Un detector de corriente o detector de campo magnético de fibra óptica, que comprende una fibra detectora (5) que se expondrá a un campo magnético de una corriente I a medir, en el que dicha fibra detectora (5) forma un bucle en un plano de la bobina detectora, y en el que dicha fibra detectora (5) tiene una constante de Verdet V, al menos un retardador (4) dispuesto entre una fibra para mantener la polarización (2) y dicha fibra detectora (5) para convertir la luz entre polarización lineal y elíptica, en el que un eje principal de dicha fibra para mantener la polarización (2) inmediatamente antes del retardador se hace girar con respecto a una normal de dicho plano de la bobina detectora en un ángulo ß y en el que dicho retardador (4) introduce un retardo P = π/2 + ε entre las ondas luminosas polarizadas a lo largo de sus ejes principales, siendo t1 un desplazamiento de fase distinto de cero, adicional, y una unidad de control (1) adaptada para generar una señal proporcional a un desplazamiento de fase δΦ, señal que es proporcional a 4 S (ε, δ, β, φF) V·N·l = 4 S (ε, δ, β, φF)·φF, en la que N es un número de bucles de dicha fibra detectora (5), φ es un desplazamiento de fase inducido por birrefringencia lineal de dicha fibra detectora (5), φF es un desplazamiento de fase de Faraday y S es un factor de escala, en el que una derivada normalizada de S con respecto a la temperatura T es caracterizado por que ß, ε y son tales que se satisface sobre un intervalo de valores de φF y para un valor distinto de cero del desplazamiento de fase δ inducido por birrefringencia lineal y su dependencia de la temperatura dada, al menos a una temperatura T0, en particular en un centro de un intervalo de temperatura operativa del detector, siendo t1 un primer valor umbral menor de 7*10 -5 1/K, en particular menor de 2*10 -5 1/K.

Abstract: In a fiber-optic current sensor, a 22.5° Faraday rotator,which is part of the sensing fiber coil,determines the working point of the sensor. The coil is operated with substantially linearly polarized light or incoherent substantially left and right circularly polarized light waves. In one arrangement, a polarization beam splitter generates two optical signals that vary in anti-phase with changing current. A signal processor determines the current from the two anti-phase signals. Appropriately detuned and oriented fiber-optic half-wave or quarter-wave retarders before the fiber coil are used to reduce or cancel the adverse effects of temperature and bend-induced birefringence on the measurement signal. Moreover, the temperature may be derived from the difference in the bias of the anti-phase signals and may be used to cancel temperature effects in the signal processor.

Abstract: A fiber optic current or magnetic field sensor uses a sensing fiber (5) in a coil for measuring a current or a magnetic field and has a retarder (4) for converting between linearly polarized light and elliptically polarized light The retardation of the retarder, its temperature dependence as well as its azimuth angle in respect to the plane of the fiber coil are optimized in dependence of the birefringence in the sensing fiber (5) in order to minimize the influence of temperature variations and manufacturing tolerances on the overall scale factor of the sensor.

Abstract: High resolution fiber-laser sensor has a double refracting first end reflector (11), a second end reflector (12), a laser amplifying fiber (13), a sensor fiber and mode coupling means (15). A number of longitudinal modes are generated in the fiber laser and interaction of a measurement valve (M) causes a change in the double refraction for the two orthogonal light polarizations. The change causes a change in beat frequency of the laser emission. The first end reflector is detuned with respect to the second end reflector. An Independent claim is made for a method for measurement of a measurement value using an optically pumped fiber laser, whereby detuned end reflectors are used and at least a signal is detected and evaluated with said signal composed of exactly two longitudinal modes based on their polarization and transverse spatial structure.
