Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a better atomization of a liquid fuel, eventually a better combustion thereof using a limited amount of air instead of a relatively large amount of air that will cause an adverse effect on the combustion in the gaseous fuel powered operation in a burner suitable for the both operation by a gaseous fuel and the liquid fuel. SOLUTION: A liquid fuel 4 is directed at a high flow and swirl velocity into settling chamber 13 of an air blast nozzle 2, where the flow and swirl velocity is reduced to form a thin fluid film on a prefilming lip 15. Blast air 5 from a blower is sent to rub the film and separates small fuel droplets with a very small particle size from the fuel film to be supplied to a burner inner chamber together with air.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To raise the lean stability limit of gas flame while enlarging the regulation range of a burner without impairing atomization of liquid fuel by controlling inflow rate of blast air into the inner burner space. SOLUTION: During operation with gas fuel, pilot gas 9 is introduced through the opening 18 of a pilot gas passage 13 into blast air 5 in an air blast nozzle 2. The pilot gas 9 is mixed with the blast air 5 thereat and supply flow of the blast air 5 is throttled. Immediately after flowing into the inner burner space 16, the mixture 23 of pilot gas and air is further mixed with the blast air 5 fed through an inner air passage 11. When the blast air 5 is throttled in such a manner, combustion gas is enriched as desired and the pilot gas 9 is mixed with the blast air 5 earlier in order to suppress adverse effect of the air flow onto the gas flame. According to the method, flame is stabilized and the lean extinction limit is improved during pilot gas operation without missing the possibility of fuel atomization.
