Abstract: The invention relates to a medium voltage circuit switch or breaker with at least one moved contact and a fixed contact, and a mechanical or magnetical drive system, which moves the fixed contact in closed or opened position, wherein the mechanical or magnetical drive system is linked to a switching generating signal, and method of operating the same, according to the preamble of claims 1 and 7. In order to provide a redundant actuation system which is cost effective and performing a smart TRIP function, the invention is, that additionally to the mechanical or magnetical drive system, the mechanical or magnetical drive system is provided with at least one pyrotechnical actuator or gas generator, and that the pyrotechnical actuator or the gas generator is linkable to the same switching generating signal of the mechanical or magnetical drive system.
