Abstract: Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of solid state circuit breaker protection are disclosed. One exemplary embodiment is a solid state circuit breaker comprising a primary switching device including a first terminal and a second terminal and a voltage clamping circuit coupled in parallel with the primary switching device. The voltage clamping circuit includes a metal-oxide varistor (MOV) coupled in series between the first terminal and an auxiliary semiconductor device, the auxiliary semiconductor device being arranged so as to selectively couple the MOV with the second terminal, and a bypass circuit coupled between the first terminal and the auxiliary semiconductor device.

Abstract: A resettable solid state fuse that automatically restores an interrupted circuit after an overcurrent event is cleared. The resettable solid state fuse can include one or more switching devices, such as, for example, a normally-on power semiconductor, and one or more positive temperature coefficient (PTC) resistive elements. The switching device is structured to extend the voltage rating of the resettable fuse, allowing the solid state resettable fuse to attain both a relatively elevated voltage rating and a relatively elevated electrical current rating while using a PTC resistive element. According to certain embodiments, the solid state resettable fuse can be tripped by a cascaded PTC resistive element, thereby providing a passive electronic device that can operate in the absence of electronic sensing, detection, and tripping, as well as without reliance on an auxiliary power supply.

Abstract: A method of operating a static transfer switch is provided. The method includes monitoring a voltage waveform for each phase of first and second power sources, and calculating flux for each phase of the power sources. The method also includes determining (i) a first flux difference between the respective flux of the first phases of the first and second power sources, (ii) a second flux difference between the respective flux of the second phases of the first and second power sources, and (iii) a third flux difference between the respective flux of the third phases of the first and second power sources. The method further includes turning off a third solid-state switch to disconnect the third phase of the first power source from a load, in response to the controller determining that the third flux difference is greater the first and second flux differences.

Abstract: A method includes energizing a transformer from a deenergized state by turning on a solid-state transfer switch to conductively couple a power source on a first side of the solid-state transfer switch and a transformer on a second side of the solid-state transfer switch, and evaluating an inrush current to the transformer from the power source. The method includes turning off the solid-state transfer switch to conductively decouple the power source and the transformer in response to the inrush current meeting a first criterion, determining a recoupling timing for the solid-state transfer switch, and turning on the solid-state transfer switch in response to the recoupling timing effective to complete energization of the transformer with the inrush current to the transformer being limited by the first criterion.

Abstract: A resonant turn-off circuit is provided to disconnect an inadequate power source and transfer a load to an alternate power source. In the circuit, a main switch is turned off before the AC cycle of the power source crosses zero. As a result, the main switch may be turned off quickly to transfer electric power supplied to a load to a second power source. The circuit may include resonant switches, a capacitor, a pre-charging power supply and an inductor. When it is desired to turn off the main switch, a resonant switch is turned off to cause a voltage reversal across the switch.

Abstract: A sliding contact assembly for a DC electrical outlet receives plug contacts of an electrical plug. The assembly includes sliding contact structure having a base and a plurality of electrical sliding contacts fixed to the base. A housing includes a first end wall having an internal top surface and second end wall opposing the first end wall. The second end wall has an internal bottom surface. The housing has a side wall structure defining an internal chamber between the top surface and the bottom surface. The sliding contact structure is disposed in the housing to be movable linearly within the chamber. A spring is disposed between the top surface of the housing and a surface of the base so that when the plug contacts are completely disconnected from the associated sliding contacts, the spring rapidly forces the sliding contacts away from the plug contacts, reducing arcing energy there-between.
