    Abstract: An assay to simultaneously detect the presence of one or more HIV subtypes of HIV-1 antibody and/or HIV-2 antibody in a test sample is disclosed. The analytes are captured on either the same or different solid phases, and the presence of the analytes is determined by detecting a signal generated by using a cocktail of synthetic and recombinant antigen-containing indicator reagents. Preferred indicator reagents include a synthetic19 amino acid cyclic peptide homologous to an immunodominant region of HIV-1 gp 41 and a synthetic19 amino acid cyclic peptide homologous to an immunodominant region of HIV-2 gp 36.
