Abstract:
A compound represented by the following general formula (I). (In the formula, R1 is hydrogen or C1-8 alkyl; ring A is 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-trans-cyclohexylene, or 2,6-naphthylene; Z1 and Z2 each are —COO—, —OCO—, —CH2O—, —OCH2—, —CH2CH2—, —CH═CH—, —C≡C—, or a single bond; m is 1 or 2; n is 0 or 1; X1 and X2 each are C1-3 alkyl or alkoxy or hydrogen, provided that when one of X1 and X2 is hydrogen, the other must not be hydrogen; Y1 and Y2 each are hydrogen, fluorine, or chlorine; Q is C1-8 saturated or unsaturated alkyl in which all or part of the hydrogen atoms are replaced by a halogen atom; and L is oxygen atom or a single bond.)

Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel liquid crystal material forming a liquid crystal composition that is low viscous and has highly anisotropic refractive index (Δn), a highly anisotropic dielectric constant (Δε) and a high NI point (wide nematic phase), when mixed with a nematic liquid crystal material. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal material is a halogen-containing compound represented by compound No. 1: 4-propyl-3'-fluoro-4"-(perfluoroallyloxy)-1,1':4', 1"-terphenyl, compound No. 2: 1-[(4'-propyl-2', 6'-fluorophenyl)difluoromethoxy]-3,5-difluoro-4-(perfluoroallyloxy)benzene, compound No. 3: 4-propyl-3,5,3'-trifluoro-4"-(perfluoroallyloxy)-1,1":4', 1"-terphenyl, and compound No. 4: 4-propyl-3,5-difluoro-3'-chloro-4"-(perfluoroallyloxy)-1,1':4', 1"-terphenyl.
