Abstract: PURPOSE:A novel compound, containing a metal component supported on a carbonaceous mesophase material, very readily producible and used as an adsorbent for a very small amount of radioactive iodine, etc., contained in waste water or catalyst for various chemical reactions, etc. CONSTITUTION:A compound obtained by supporting 0.01-40wt%, preferably 0.2-20wt%, expressed in terms of simple metal, metal component, e.g. simple substance of copper, iron, Co, Ni, Rb, silver, Mo, Ru, Rh, lead, Pd, gold, mercury, platinum, Ta, etc., or oxide, halide, salt hydroxide, sulfide, etc., or combination thereof, on a carbonaceous mesophase material having preferably about 5mum-3mm average particle diameter, e.g. mesocarbon microbeads or bulk mesophase carbon.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compact having ion-exchange function and moldability in arbitrary shape by performing crosslinking processing on amphipatic carbonaceous mesoface which is soluble in water and organic solvents and manufacturing carbonaceous mesoface compact. CONSTITUTION:Amphipatic carbonaceous mesoface is cross-linked. This crosslinking processing can be performed chemically with the addition of a crosslinking agent or physically by applying radiation. This process is carried out in an atmosphere and at temperatures (normally below 400 deg.C, preferably below 200 deg.C) which do not cause deterioration of the carbonaceous mesoface. When the crosslinking processing is chemically performed, any proper technique can be selected depending upon the kind of a hydrophilic group possessed in the amphipatic carbonaceous mesoface, and use of compacts obtained, etc. However, when the hydrophilic group has activated hydrogen such as a hydroxyl group or carboxyl group crosslinking processing is generally performed with an ion mechanism of condensation reaction or addition reaction-type.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To convert a carbonaceous substance into fibrous graphite consisting only of carbon having developed graphite crystals while holding the fibrous form of SiC, by heat-treating a mixture of the carbonaceous substance with fibrous SiC in an inert gas. CONSTITUTION:A mixture of 10-70wt.% powdery carbonaceous substance, such as carbon black or active carbon, with 90-30wt.% fibrous SiC (e.g., SiC whisker) is heat-treated at >=2400 deg.C in an inert gas, such as N2, Ar or He, to afford the title graphite substance having 0.2-10mu diameter.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an amphipathic carbonaceous mesophase which is soluble in water and/or an organic solvent and gives, when the water and/or the organic solvent is removed from this solution, a solid substance that can be carbonized through heat treatment, by introducing a hydrophilic group into a carbonaceous mesophase. CONSTITUTION:An amphipathic carbonaceous mesophase made by introducing a hydrophilic group (e.g., a nitro, sulfo, carboxyl or amino group) into a carbonaceous mesophase insoluble in water and/or an organic solvent, formed in a process of carbonizing a heavy bituminous substance such as pitch. This amphipathic mesophase can be dissolved in water and/or an organic solvent to form a liquid, which becomes solid when the water and/or the organic solvent is removed. When heat-treated, this solid substance undergoes elimination of the functional group introduced and is carbonized without softening or melting. These features can be utilized for the manufacture of an adsorbent, an ion exchanger, etc.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain silicon nitride whisker with simple operation by supporting polysiloxanes having a specific substituent on a carbonaceous substance and heating in nitrogen stream. CONSTITUTION:The objective silicon nitride whisker is produced by supporting dimethylpolysiloxane, ether methylpolysiloxane or methylalkylpolysiloxane (organic silicon compounds) on a carbonaceous substance and treating in nitrogen gas stream at 1,200-1,500 deg.C. The carbonaceous substance supporting said polysiloxanes is coke, fiber or activated carbon. There is no or extremely little formation of whisker by using other inorganic substances such as alumina or silicon dioxide. It is necessary to support the polysiloxane on a carbonaceous substance in order to produce a large quantity of whiskers. The coke may be a green coke containing several % of volatile component (organic material) or a calcined coke produced by calcining the green coke.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain graphite whisker having superior characteristics by treating active carbon previously, then heat-treating. CONSTITUTION:Active carbon having >=500m /g specific surface area is treated with mineral acid, then heat-treated at >=2,000 deg.C. Effective mineral acid is HCl, H2SO4, HNO3 or their mixture. Necessary concn. of the acid is >=ca.0.5 N. If mixed acid is to be used, the proportion of the component acid may be optional. Suitable treating temp. is room temp. (ca.20 deg.C)-100 deg.C, and suitable treating time is >=ca.5min. The treatment is executed by immersing the active carbon in the acid just enough to dip the active carbon, allowing to stand or stirring slightly. Then, the acid is removed by filtration or decantation, and the active carbon is washed throughly with water and dried.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare inexpensively and in large amt. expanded graphite which is useful as a material for graphite sheet, etc. by heating raw material pitch, to obtain carbonaceous mesophase, to make a graphite from the mesophase and then oxidizing in the wet state. CONSTITUTION:Heat-treated pitch contg. optically anisotropic carbonaceous mesophase in a raw material pitch is obtd. by heating the raw material pitch (e.g. coal tar pitch) at 350-500 deg.C in inert gas atmosphere. 1pt.wt. said heat- treated pitch is mixed with 0.3pts.wt. org. solvent (e.g. quinoline) and stirred separating the carbonaceous mesophase alone. Unnecessary components are removed by repeating the procedure >=2 times at high temp. Obtd. carbonaceous mesophase is graphitized at 2,400-3,100 deg.C to obtain graphitized product, >=10pts. wt. of which is mixed with a mixture of 9pts.wt. H2SO4 and 1pts.wt. HNO3 and the mixture is oxidized in the wet state at >=50 deg.C for >=2hr.

Abstract: PURPOSE:A carbonaceous substance which has fine pores of specific surface area and average pore diameter within specific ranges, respectively is heat- treated at elevated temperature to enable simple and inexpensive production of graphite whiskers of high tensile strength. CONSTITUTION:A stating material for activated carbon from wood or coal such as sawdust is heat-treated and further treated by chemical activation or gas activation to prepare activated carbon with a specific surface area of more than about 500m /g and fine pores of 1-2nm diameter. Then, the resultant activated carbon is graphitized in a nonoxidative atmosphere such as nitrogen or argon gas at a temperature over 2,800 deg.C to give the objective graphite whiskers.
