Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide electrochemical production of active oxygen and a method for accelerating selective reduction of nitrogen oxide (NOx) by the active oxygen. SOLUTION: A lean-burn combustion exhaust gas containing NOx, hydrocarbons, and oxygen is introduced in a gas chamber containing a yttria- stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as a solid electrolytic substance and a NOx selective reduction catalyst by hydrocarbons as a positive or negative work electrode and voltage is applied to the foregoing work electrode and the foregoing solid electrolytic substance to produce active oxygen on the surface of the foregoing work electrode and partially oxidize the hydrocarbons in the foregoing gas and also NO to NO2 gas to produce their intermediate substances and owing to the reactions of these intermediate substances, NOx selective reduction reaction is promoted to reduce NOx to nitrogen.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a non-saturated hydrocarbon or the like with a double bond even at an operation temperature of 550 deg.C or higher with improved sensitivity by allowing one of a pair of electrodes to have at least a metal oxide. SOLUTION: Platinum paste is baked to a disk 1 made of a zirconia sintered compact for forming a reference electrode 21a made of a platinum layer, the platinum layer is covered with a platinum mesh 22a (the size of the mesh: 100), and a platinum conductor 32a is connected for energization. Further, a detection electrode 21b is formed by a mixed paste of metal oxide power and metal powder on the opposite surface of the disk 1, and the mesh 22b is covered similarly and a conductor 32b is connected. The mixed paste is in various blend ratio according to the type of the metal oxide powder and the metal powder and is obtained by adding and mixing diethyleneglycol. In this case, each oxide of Nb, Ta, Fe, and Ga has improved detection sensitivity for hydrocarbon with a double bond. For example, in the case of an Nb oxide, by setting the content to 3-20% in the mixture with gold, the detection sensitivity can be improved especially.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an electrode material which has an improved oxidation resistance in a specified low-temperature range, exhibits a high NOx-reducing action even in a low-temperature range, and enables a trifunctional catalyst to be used even in a diesel exhaust gas by thermally treating a Pd electrode at a specified high temperature. SOLUTION: A trifunctional catalyst is attached to an ionically conductive oxide ceramic to form an electrochemical call wherein the former is used as a solid electrolyte and the latter as a minus electrode. An NOx-containing gas is introduced into a minus electrode chamber, and voltage is supplied from an outer power source to the cell. In this cell, Pd electrodes treated at a high temperature are used respectively as the minus and the plus electrodes. The Pd electrode is prepared by using a paste of Pd particles diluted with an organic solvent (e.g. diethylene glycol) and by thermally treating the paste at 1,400-1,500 deg.C, preferably at 1,450 deg.C. The heat treatment of the Pd electrode at such a high temperature enhances the NOx reduction capability at 750 deg.C or lower. The Pd electrode heat-treated at a high temperature may be modified by coating with an Rh metal.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide voltage in homogenous gas so as to take out current stably by printing two electrodes, in each of which catalytic ability in partial oxidation reaction of hydrocarbon is different from each other, on the same surface of an electrolyte sheet and introducing mixture gas of lower hydrocarbon and air. CONSTITUTION: On the surface of a solid electrolyte sheet consisting of stabilized zirconia or perovskite type oxide, a Pd.Ag.Ni or Rh electrode and an electrode 3, which is made of Ag and the like and provided with no catalytic ability, are printed. A mixture gas of lower hydrocarbon such as methane and air is introduced, and even in homogeneous gas, voltage can be obtained, and electric current can be taken out stably. Under an operating condition of heating at a temperature of 700-1000 deg.C, a mixture gas of the optimum composition ratio for partial oxidation between the lower hydrocarbon and oxygen is introduced, and electric power is taken out, while hydrogen and carbon monoxide are collected from a battery outlet. In this way, the thinning of electrolyte film 16 is dispensed with, and environmental preservation based on low exhaust of carbon dioxide and chemical cogeneration based on the generation of hydrogen and carbon monoxide can be accomplished at a low cost.
