Abstract: PURPOSE:To liquefy coal while catalytic activity at least equal to that of a powdery catalyst is dynamically revealed and maintained without the necessity for grinding, when a catalyst is synthesized or prepared, by performing coal liquefaction while vibrating a layer filled with a metal having catalytic activity. CONSTITUTION:A filled layer formed from a metal having catalytic activity, such as iron or molybdenum, in the form of a sphere or rod, is maintained at 350-450 deg.C under a hydrogen pressure of 10-20 MPa, the filling material therein is vibrated, and hydrogen, sulfur, a solvent, and coal are supplied to the vibrated layer, thus performing coal liquefaction. It is desirable that the size of the filling material is in the range from 1 to 5 mm. To vibrate the filling material, the container as a whole can be vibrated, or only the filling material can be vibrated by utilizing electromagnetic induction. It is desirable that the frequency of vibration is at least 20 Hz.
