    Abstract: The invention provides carbon fibers having mechanical properties equivalent to or even better than those of the polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers from a bituminous material, e.g. coal tar pitch, as the starting material. The starting pitch is first partially hydrogenated in tetrahydroquinoline under specific conditions followed by a heat treatment to give a pitch composition suitable for spinning which can be characterized by several parameters including the proportions of the carbons and hydrogens having different chemical shifts in the NMR analysis. The pitch composition for spinning is then subjected to spinning under specific conditions including the temperature condition for controlling the viscosity behavior of the molten pitch composition determined by use of the Andrade's equation and the pitch filament is then infusibilized in an oxidative atmosphere and carbonized in an inert atmosphere into carbon fibers having a tensile strength of at least 200 kg/mm2 and a tensile modulus of at least 10 tons/mm2.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the titled carbon fiber containing crystals oriented along circumferential direction at the skin layer of the fiber in the cross-section and having radially or mosaically oriented texture and a specific micro-structure at the core part, and exhibiting high performance comparable to a PAN-based carbon fiber. CONSTITUTION:The objective fiber contains crystals oriented along circumferential direction at the skin layer 1 of the fiber and has radially or mosaically oriented texture at the core part. Furthermore, the fiber has micro-structure characterized by the orientation angle (OA) of 30-50 deg.C (determined by X-ray diffraction analysis), a crystal size (Lc) of 12-80Angstrom and an interlaminar spacing (doo2) of 3.4-3.6Angstrom , and has a tensile strength of >=200kg/mm and a modulus of >=10t/mm . The fiber can be produced by melting a spinning-grade pitch raw material containing pre-mesophase pitch, spinning the pitch after heating at a temperature to lose the optical anisotropy, and infusibilizing and carbonizing the fiber.
