    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a highly functional liquid crystal polyamide polymer excellent in heat resistance and durability, and useful e.g. for recording materials, oriented films and nonlinear optical materials by forming a polymer having a specific chemical structure. SOLUTION: This polymer is expressed by formula I [wherein R is methyl, ethyl, or the like; (m)+(n)=5 to 10,000, (n) is 1 to 10,000 and (m) is 0 to 100(n); Q is H or a substituent not containing azo group; Z is a group of N=N-A-X, or the like; a is benzene ring or naphthalene ring both capable of having at least one substituent in addition to a group of X; and X is a 1-10C alkoxy, or the like] and is e.g. a polymer of formula II. The polymer is obtained by the polycondensation reaction of 5-(4'-n-hexyloxyphenylazo)isophthalic acid, or the like with 4,4'-diamino-3,5,3',5'-tetraethyldiphenylmethane, or the like, in an inactive organic solvent such as N-methylpyrrolidone in the presence of a condensation catalyst such as a combination of triphenylphosphite with pyridine.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To eliminate the secular deterioration of resolution and to store and delete information with a single light source by providing specific high polymer film adjacent to a liquid crystal layer, forming a pattern with light to be reversively deleted by heating. CONSTITUTION:A high polymer film 2 composed of polyacrylate, polymethacrylate, polyvinyl acetal, polyvinyl ethel, or polysiloxane with a group represented by a formula I on side chain is provided adjacent to a liquid crystal layer 3. The pattern is formed with the light, and the formed pattern is reversively deleted by heating. In the formula I, R is alkyl group, alkoxy group or alkylamino group. A is polymethylene group or polymethylene group where one part of the methylene group is replaced by the formula I, II, III, or IV.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a light recording material having high moldability and productivity and causing no aging deterioration of resolution by dispersing a mixture of a photochromic compound and nematic liquid crystal in a polymer. CONSTITUTION:Nematic liquid crystal fine grains 2 containing a preset quantity of a photochromic compound changed with the structure by light are dispersed and solidified in a polymer film 1 to form a recording material. The fine grains 2 are reversibly made isotropic or into the state that the monitor light is scattered by the refraction factor change between the grains 2 and the polymer by the radiation light (1), (2) with different wavelengths. A light recording material having high moldability and and productivity and causing no aging deterioration of the resolution of the recorded information due to the flow of the liquid crystal is obtained.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obviate the degradation in image resolution with time by laminating a high-polymer compd. layer which is reversibly changed in structure by light and a liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:The high-polymer compd. having the residual group which is reversibly changed in structure by light is naturally adsorbed on a transparent substrate 1 to provide the thin film 2; further, the liquid crystal layer 3 is laminated thereon. The high-polymer compd. which is reversibly changed in structure by light is naturally adsorbed on the substrate and the high-polymer adsorbed thin film is eventually formed if the liquid crystal dissolved or dispersed with such high-polymer compd. is introduced into the substrate. The arrangement of the liquid crystal layer is rapidly transmitted even if the arrangement is the overlaps of the molecules of >=10,000 times the compd. when the liquid crystal layer in contact with the thin film is reversibly arranged parallel or perpendicular according to the reversible change in the structure of the residual group in the thin film by the light. The liquid crystal layer does not change in this way unless the state of the light changes. The information is thus maintained over a long period of time.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To allow writing and erasing of information by light and to enable the long-term preservation of the written records by consisting the above element of specific spirooxazines and bivalent metal ions. CONSTITUTION:This optical memory element is constituted by dispersing the spirooxazines as a photochromic compd. and the bivalent metal ions forming a stable chelate complex therewith into a medium. The spirooxazines are exemplified by the compd. expressed by formula I.     Abstract: PURPOSE:To stably selectively and reversibly obtain tristate optical states according to the states of light for irradiation by laminating a high-polymer compd. layer which causes a change in the molecular structure and aggregate structure by the effect of light and a liquid crystal layer on a transparent substrate. CONSTITUTION:A thin film 2 of the high-polymer compd. which causes the change in the aggregate structure reversible by light is provided on the transparent substrate 1 and further, the liquid crystal layer 3 is laminated thereon. The surface thereof is further coated with a substrate 4 in order to prevent dissipation and failure. The liquid crystal has the orientation (planar orientation) inclined with the substrate plane by the effect of the photochromic high-polymer thin film 2. The aggregate structure of the thin film 2 for generating a partial structure in the molecular structure of the photochromic residues changes and the liquid crystal has the direction perpendicular to the surface (homeotropic orientation) is this element is irradiated with light for a short period of time. Further, the conversion rate of the photochromic residues increases if the photoirradiation is continued. The planar orientation having the angle of inclination different from the angle of inclination of an initial period is attained by the effect of the molecular structure after the conversion.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an optical recording material recording information by a change of orientation of a liq. crystal under light and preventing the deterioration of the resolution due to flowability with the lapse of time by forming a film of a compd. having a unit which causes a reversible structural change under light on a transparent substrate by the Langmuir-Blodgett's (LB) technique and forming a liq. crystal layer on the film. CONSTITUTION:A film 2 of an amphipatic compd. having a unit which causes a reversible structural change under light is formed on a transparent substrate 1 by the LB technique and a liq. crystal layer 3 is formed on the film 2. The liq. crystal takes reversible parallel and perpendicular arrangements in accordance with two kinds of structures of the reversibly changing unit. Even when the liq. crystal layer is composed of >=10,000 times as much superposed molecules as the molecules of the amphipatic compd., rapid transmission is ensured. The liq. crystal layer undergoes no change unless the state of light is changed and information is retained over a long period of time.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To eliminate the lowering of resolution with lapse of time due to fluidity by providing a liquid crystal layer through a molecular layer of compound which makes a structural change reversibly by light on a transparent substrate whose surface is finely deformed. CONSTITUTION:The title element is constructed to sandwich a liquid crystal layer 3 between two substrates 1 which have monomolecular layer 2 of the photochromic compound and whose surfaces are finely deformed. When light is projected on one part A, the photochromic compound makes the structural change, therefore, the vertical arrangement of the part is destroyed and liquid crystal makes an arrangement parallel to the surface. Consequently, when this photo recording element is put between two polarizers whose polarizing axes are perpendicular to each other, parts B on which the light is not projected are dark, however, the part A on which the light is projected becomes bright and a clear picture can be obtained. Since the polarization of a wavelength which does not generate photochromism can be used for reading information, the information is not destroyed. Thus, the lowering of the resolution with lapse of time due to the liquid crystal having the fluidity is eliminated.
