Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an energy absorption system and method solving a variety of limits with respect to present embodiment of a crush tube absorption system loaded in an axial direction.
SOLUTION: The energy absorption system and method comprised of a crush tube, a taper component, and a flare component. The crush tube is inserted into a matching hole in the taper component. As the taper and flare components are moved down over the crush tube, the taper component decreases the diameter of the crush tube and the flare component splits the crush tube in a plurality of petals. The crush tube may include a plurality of initiator slits to aid in the flaring process. When mounted with the longitudinal axis of the crush tube parallel to an axis of an impact, the present invention is capable of absorbing some or all of the crash event by dissipating energy by the tapering, flaring, friction, and other methods.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an energy absorbing system and method capable of solving various restrictions on a present embodiment of a crush tube absorbing system loaded in an axial direction. SOLUTION: This energy absorbing system and method is comprised of a crush tube, a taper structure portion, and a flare structure portion. The crush tube is inserted in a matching hole of the taper structure portion. When the taper structure portion and the flare structure portion are moved on the crush tube, the taper structure portion decreases a diameter of the crush tube, and the flare structure portion divides the crush tube into a plurality of petals. The crush tube may include a plurality of initiator slits for supporting flaring processing. When attached by a vertical shaft of the crush tube parallel with an impact axis, the energy absorbing system can absorb a large majority or all of collision accidents by eliminating energy by tapering, flaring, friction, and another method. Abstract: An energy absorption system and method comprised of a crush tube (210), a taper component (205), and a flare component (205). The crush tube (210) is inserted into a matching hole in the taper component (205). As the taper and flare components are moved down over the crush tube, the taper component decreases the diameter of the crush tube (210) and the flare component (205) splits the crush tube in a plurality of petals (430). The crush tube (210) may include a plurality of initiator slits (215) to aid in the flaring process. When mounted with the longitudinal axis of the crush tube parallel to an axis of an impact, the present invention is capable of absorbing some or all of the crash event by dissipating energy by the tapering, flaring, friction, and other methods.

Abstract: A method of repairing a discrepancy in a casting, weldment or other workpiece comprised of a material characterized by thermoplastic properties includes excising the discrepancy by cutting, milling, or otherwise removing workpiece material surrounding the discrepancy so as to remove the discrepancy and form a cylindrical hole in the workpiece. The method further includes placing a cylindrical plug in the cylindrical hole and moving a friction stir welding tool around the circumference of the plug to weld the plug to the workpiece.

Abstract: A tie down assembly (10) including a cup (12), a cross-shaped crossbar (14) that is fastened removably to and positioned within a recess (36) of the cup (12), and a discshaped plate (16) that is fastened removably to the cup (12) and/or the crossbar (14). The crossbar (14) is fastened to the cup (12) by a plurality of fasteners (18), while the plate (16) is fastened to the cup (12) and/or the crossbar (14) by at least one fastener (18). The cup (12) is installed within a hole formed within a first surface (94) of a structure (92), and the plate (16) is positioned against an opposite surface (96) of the structure (92). When the plate (16) is attached, a compressive load is introduced and squeezes the first and second surfaces (94, 96) of the structure (92) together, such that most of the load is borne down the center of the fastener (18) attaching the plate (12).
