Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cassette for surgical operation having a hard fluid channel formed in a part or a housing made of a rigid plastic to improve a conventional technique. SOLUTION: The housing plays a role as the substrate for an elastomer acoustic coupling formed on the housing of the exterior side of the fluid channel by an over-molding process. Such a technique eliminates the necessity of an adhesive for mounting the elastomer acoustic coupling on the housing, and also ensures the removal of air from between the elastomer acoustic coupling and the housing. SOLUTION: A surgical system having a console that receives a cassette with a rigid fluid channel formed into a rigid plastic component or housing. The housing serves as a substrate for an elastomeric acoustic coupling that can be formed on the housing outside the fluid channel. The acoustic transducer is elastically mounted within the console, such as on a spring, so as to provide a relatively constant force between the transducer and the acoustic coupling when the cassette is installed in the console. The housing serves as a substrate for an elastomeric acoustic coupling that can be formed on the housing outside of the fluid channel by an over molding process. Such a construction method eliminates the need for adhesives to attach the elastomeric acoustic coupling to the housing and ensures the removal of any air from between the elastomeric acoustic coupling and the housing.

A surgical cassette (150) is provided which is adapted for insertion into a cassette receiver (125) in a surgical console (100) and to be held in place by at least one clamp (144,184) in the cassette receiver, the cassette comprising compliant clamping zones (160,190; 165,195) configured to deform to conform to any non-uniform load profile applied to the cassette. The clamping portion(s) (190,195) can include ribs (240) that are sized and made of a suitable material such that the ribs will deflect predictably in an elastic region and flow plastically when the material yield point is exceeded. The use of ribs creates discrete small load areas that will deflect and distort predictably and non-catastrophically at high loads. This allows for the absorption of accumulated tolerances between the clamping mechanism (142,144; 182,184) and the cassette (e.g. non-parallelism between the clamping mechanism and the cassette while still providing a distributed load on the cassette.
