Abstract: a ,a 1 - Bis(3,5 - dimethyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl)-p-tolyl ether is prepared (see Example 6) by the reaction of a ,a 1-dichloro-p-tolyl-ether and 2,6-dimethylphenol.ALSO:Chlorinated polyethylene is stabilized with an a ,a 1-di-(4-oxyphenyl) derivative of p-tolyl ether. Preferred compounds are a ,a 1-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl) - p - tolyl ether, a ,a 1 - bis (3,5 - dimethyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl) - p - tolyl ether, and the diglycidyl ether of a ,a 1-bis (4-hydroxyphenyl)-p-tolyl ether.

Abstract: 1,128,069. Bisphenol derivatives of pentalene. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 3 Feb., 1966 [26 Feb., 1965], No. 4850/66. Heading C2C. Bisphenols of the general formula in which A and A 1 are the same or different, occupy positions ortho to the phenolic hydroxy groups and are C 1 -C 3 alkyl derivatives; X and X 1 are the same or different are chlorine or bromine atoms and n, n 1 , p and p 1 are each 0, 1 or 2, the sum of n and p being 0, 1 or 2 and the sum of n 1 and p 1 being 0, 1 or 2 are prepared by reacting 1, la, 3, 3a, 4, 5, 5, 5a, 6-decachlorooctahydro - 1,3,4 - metheno - 2H - cyclobuta [cd] pentalene-2-one of formula or a hydrate thereof in the presence of an acid of formula R-O 3 H, in which R is hydroxy or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, alkaryl, aryl or aralkyl radical with (a) a phenol of formula at a temperature above 100‹ C. when R is OH and above 140‹ C. when R is other than OH to give a compound in which A, X, p and n are the same as A 1 , X 1 , p 1 and n 1 respectively or (b) a phenol of the above formula at a temperature below 100‹ C. when R is OH and below 140‹ C. when R is other than OH and then with a second phenol of formula at a temperature above 100‹ C. when R is OH and above 140‹ C. when R is other than OH to give a compound in which A, X, p and n are different from A 1 , X 1 , p 1 and n 1 . Suitable phenols are, for example, phenol itself, o-cresol, 2-ethyl phenol, 2,6-dimethyl phenol, 2-methyl- 6-ethyl phenol, 2-isopropyl phenol, 2,6-diisopropyl phenol, 2-n-propyl-phenol, 2,6-dichlorophenol, 2-bromo phenol, 2-chloro-6-methyl phenol 2-bromo-6-isopropyl phenol and 2,6- dibromophenol. In a modification, the starting pentalene-2-one (or its hydrate) may be reacted with an acid R-SO 3 H, in which R is alkyl, alkaryl, aryl, or aralkyl radical with a phenol of formula at a temperature below 140‹ C. and subsequently with a dissimilar phenol of formula at a temperature above 140‹ C. to give a bisphenol of the general formula given.
