Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a curved optical device and a manufacturing method therefor. SOLUTION: This curved optical device includes a pair of flexible substrates flat initially and opposed each other, and a spacer and a sealed fluid material arranged between the substrates. The substrates have a uniform controlled space. The substrates are permanently curved by applying heat and pressure to a mold while maintaining the controlled space. The fluid material is a liquid crystal for imparting an enhanced optical property to the optical device. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
Abstract:
A mixture used in photochromic devices comprises a photochromic dye and a thermoset adhesive. An optical device using the mixture may include a carrier substrate which may then be secured to another substrate or a lens. Assembly of the carrier substrate and mixture to another substrate and/or lens may be accomplished by thermoforming, lamination, insert molding or the like.

Abstract:
A solar powered variable light attenuating device includes a liquid crystal cell, a photovoltaic cell in electrical communication with the liquid crystal cell, and a light concentrator having a light absorbing surface and a light emitting surface optically coupled to the photovoltaic cell. At least a portion of light impinging on the light absorbing surface of the light concentrator is concentrated and directed through the light emitting surface to a photon- absorbing portion of the photovoltaic cell to generate a voltage. The generated voltage is used to change the liquid crystal cell from a de-energized state to an energized state in response to sunlight directed toward the photovoltaic cell.
Abstract:
A cell for the electronic attenuation of light suitable for use in eyewear includes spaced substrates coated with a conducting layer, and preferably a passivation layer and an alignment layer. Disposed between the substrates is a guest-host solution comprising a host material and a light-absorbing dichroic dye guest. A power circuit is provided with a power supply connected to the conducting layers. Adjustment of the power supply alters the orientation of the host material which in turn alters the orientation of the dichroic dye. Light is absorbed by the dichroic dye, depending upon its orientation without the need for polarizers.
Abstract:
A splicing asymmetric reflective array (10) for combining at least two input beams (12, 14) into a combined output (16). The arrays include a plurality of substantially reflecting, adjacently positioned layers (20). Each layer (20) has substantially the same width (24) and substantially the same thickness (22) while having a different height dimension (26). A collective entry portion (40) is formed by the adjacent layers' width and thickness dimensions, wherein at least two input beams are directed into and received therein. A collective exit portion (42) is formed by the adjacent layers' height dimensions, wherein the height dimensions are monotonically increasing. A cascade array (60) incorporating the array 10 and reduced size arrays (64, 66, 68, and 70) may be used to combine more than two input beams into one. A three-dimensional array (80), which alters the slope of each layer's height dimension, can be used to combine four input beams (82) into one output beam (84).
