Abstract: A portable (e.g., laptop) computer, comprises upper and lower housing structures (12A, 12B: Figure 1) coupled by a hinge, a display (14) in the upper housing structure including a colour filter (CF) layer 60, a thin-film transistor (TFT) layer 52, and an opaque masking layer 138; the opaque, light blocking shielding layer 138 is interposed between the color filter (CF) and thin-film transistor (TFT) layers, and blocks inactive peripheral portions of the display from view. The opaque masking layer is formed in a border around the periphery of the display, and has an opening 140, an image sensing camera 102 in the upper housing structure receiving light through the opening. The opaque, light shielding layer may comprise a black ink layer, and can be formed on a top or a lower surface of the colour filter (CF) layer, which may be a colour filter glass substrate.

Abstract: An electronic device comprises a display having a colour filter layer 60 and a thin-film-transistor (TFT) layer 52, each layer having an opening or aperture 190. The device further comprises an insert layer 180 having a camera window 130 is mounted over the opening, and a camera 22 having lens structures 126 aligned with camera window. The camera would be integrated into the device and mounted underneath the display. The insert layer may be a layer of glass. The insert layer may be mounted onto a ledge or shelf 184, the ledge being formed on top of the TFT layer at a portion (a recess) where the colour filter is not located. The display may further comprise a polariser 62 mounted to the colour filter layer. The polariser might an opaque masking layer 192, and this layer has an opening aligned with the camera window. The polariser may be depolarised in a region 132 aligned with the opaque masking layer opening.

Abstract: An electronic device may have a liquid crystal display with backlight structures. The backlight structures may produce backlight that passes through an array of display pixels. The display pixels may include electrode structures and thin-film transistor structures for controlling electric fields in a layer of liquid crystal material. The liquid crystal material may be formed between an outer display layer and an inner display layer. The inner display layer may be interposed between the backlight structures and the liquid crystal material. Thin-film transistor structures, electrodes, and conductive interconnection lines may be deposited in a layer on the inner surface of the outer display layer. A layer of color filter elements may be used to provide the display with color pixels. The color filter elements may be formed on top of the thin-film transistor layer or on a separate color filter array substrate such as the inner display layer.

Abstract: An electronic device comprises a display including a polariser 62 (polarising layer), the polariser having an opening or aperture 144 there through; a sleeve (sheath) 146 that passes through the opening; and a camera 22 having lens structures 126 that are at least partially contained within the sleeve. The camera is integrated into the electronic device. The display may further comprise a thin-film-transistor (TFT) layer 52, a colour filter layer 60, and a layer of glass 180 that also has an opening 182 through which the sleeve and lens pass (i.e. opening 182 is aligned with opening 144). The layer of glass may be an elongated strip that is mounted onto a ledge or shelf 184, the ledge being formed on top of the TFT layer at a portion (a recess) where the colour filter is not located. The layer of glass may be inserted within a notch in the colour filter layer and TFT layer.
