Abstract: Methods and apparatus for improved power control in communications (such as connection establishment) in a wireless network, in one embodiment, a data-based, iterative approach is used to select an appropriate transmission power level during the establishment of a wireless connection. An assessment of the quality of the channel between a connecting device and target device is made, based on a received reference signal from the target device. The assessment is used to select an initial power level for a random access request. In the case a response is not received, a subsequent assessment of the channel quality is made. If the quality of the channel has changed, then a second power level for a second random access request is selected. This approach allows the connecting device to adapt to changing conditions related to the channel quality, and adjust its transmission power level accordingly.
