Abstract: Two electro-hydraulic proportional servo actuators are disclosed and each comprises an electro magnetic device such as torque motor or proportional solenoid energizable to operate a three-way hydraulic servo valve which, in turn, effects proportional amplified linear movement of a spring centered hydraulic ram in the actuator. The ram comprises two piston areas, one larger than the other, and the smaller piston area is always exposed to the full fluid pressure of the system. The servo valve operates to supply or relieve pilot fluid pressure on the larger piston area to effect ram movement because of the pressure differential. In one actuator in accordance with the invention, feedback means are connected between portions of the three-way valve and the ram to hold the ram in desired position. In the said one actuator manually operable over-ride means are provided to enable ram operation if the electro magnetic device fails. In another actuator in accordance with the invention, the three-way valve is directly associated with the ram for feedback purposes and separate feedback means and manually operable over-ride means between the servo valve and ram are eliminated.

Abstract: 1400381 Fluid-pressure servomotor systems APPLIED POWER Inc 10 Sept 1973 [11 Sept 1972 11 June 1973] 42385/73 HeadingG3P In a fluid-pressure servomotor system, a differential ram 70 has fluid-pressure constantly applied to its smaller face 120 while a servovalve 50 applies or relieves fluid-pressure on the larger face 122, a feedback connection being provided between the ram and the valve. The valve spool 50 is adjusted by a solenoid adjustably connected to the housing 11 and energized from a battory 34 through a rheostat 29 and switches 43, 44 to determine the direction and extent of displacement of the spool which connects a space 111 either to a supply duct 15 or a drain duct 16. The movement of the ram causes cam surfaces 103, 125 and a follower 59 to displace a sleeve 51 surrounding the spool until the servovalve is again closed and the ram has been moved by an amount corresponding to the input signal. In the event of electrical failure a handle 65 allows the servo sleeve to be. directly operated. In a second embodiment, the servovalve (250), Fig. 9 (not shown) is arranged transversely to the ram (270) which abuts a spool valve (310) controlling a piston and cylinder (340). In this embodiment, a handle (145), Fig. 8 or (140), Fig. 7 (not shown) may be connected directly or by a lever to the armature of the solenoid and the valve spool to permit manual operation.

Abstract: A hydraulic pressure control valve includes a spool which has a first end having a first cross-sectional area. The opposite end of the spool has a reduced cross-sectional area. Modulated pressure is provided to a chamber at the first end of the spool and when it increases beyond the force of a biasing spring, an inlet port is connected to an outlet port. Feedback pressure acts on the differential area between a full cross-sectional area of the spool and a reduced area portion of the spool located within the outlet port. The feedback force on the spool is in proportion to the changing control force. A sleeve is provided at the end of the valve adjacent the reduced area portion of the spool, such portion and sleeve cooperating to provide a sliding seal. The outlet port will be coupled to tank whenever the modulated pressure falls below the combination of the spring force and the feedback pressure.

Abstract: A proportional pressure control valve is disclosed which may be used for uni-directional or bi-directional fluid flow. An electromagnetic driver mounted in a driver cavity of a housing produces a magnetic flux path in response to a variable input current. The magnitude of the flux path is substantially proportinal to the input current. The flux path passes through an armature which is movable within the driver cavity. The armature is connected to a metering spool so that the two move in unison. The metering spool is movable within a main bore between a sealing position and an infinite number of open positions. The position of the metering spool determines the magnitude of fluid communication between pressure ports. A feedback section of the housing establishes a pressure feedback force which impacts on the position of the metering spool and the armature. The valve may also include a spring for biasing the metering spool to a fail-safe position within the housing. The proportional pressure control valve can be incorporated into a damper of a vehicle suspension system where the input current is governed by an electronic control unit of the vehicle. The electronic control unit may be responsive, in part, to the position of the suspension system through the use of a position feedback sensor.
