Abstract: An image processing system is disclosed. The system includes a first light source operable to illuminate an image plane in a first direction and a second light source operable to illuminate the image plane from a second direction. Also included is a sensing device operable to detect light from the first and second light source that interacted with the image plane. A processor operable to receive information from the sensing device and determine an image and image defects is coupled to the sensing device.

Abstract: A method for use in generating a digital representation of an image by applying a first light to an image storing medium which includes the image, detecting the first light which is reflected from or transmitted through the image storing medium in order to provide a first image signal, applying a pulse of a second light to the image storing medium, and detecting the second light which is reflected from or transmitted through the image storing medium in order to provide a second image signal, whereby the second image signal may be used to modify the first image signal to generate a modified digital representation of the image. A method of scanning an image with visible light and a pulse of infrared light is also provided, as well as a system for use in generating a digital representation of an image.
